About our Herd
Our equine staff is purposely selected according to size, movement, and disposition to meet the specific needs of our clients, whether working astride or from the ground. They have gone through intensive training to work with children and adults who have physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Each horse goes through a 30 day trial period where they are put through a series of tests and tasks, which they must pass before being accepted into the program. On average, only 1 in 10 horses that come in on trial end up becoming a therapy horse.

Garfield

Born 2008, a Haflinger, 14.3hh. Being of the draft breed, he can handle adults as well as children in the ring. He also hails from Ohio and carries the WHF brand where he was also trained and purchased for HEARTS TRC.

“D”

Born in 2001 in California. D is 16 hands tall and has been a lesson horse, trail horse, and show horse in his previous careers. D loves that his current job as a therapy horse allows him to get so much people time. He enjoys all the attention everyone gives him. D is owned by the Green family and is on loan to Hearts TRC.

Knight

Knight is a 17 year old Quarter Horse. Knight came to us from KW Equestrian and the Seaton family in Upstate New York. Knight catches the eye of everyone who comes to the farm with his black coat and white blaze. He has a smooth trot that is great for our riders.

Yankee

Yankee (registered name Yankee Possessed) is a 2001 Standardbred gelding. Standing 16.3 hands, he is the biggest member of the Hearts' herd! While he may be a big boy, Yankee is a gentle giant and is very sweet and quiet to ride and handle. Yankee is the son of a Hambletonian winner, which is the most prestigious race for trotters, and was bred at Yankeeland Farm in Maryland. After an unsuccessful harness racing career, Yankee went to work for the Amish pulling a buggy. When he retired from this career, Yankee was rescued by the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF). Hearts adopted Yankee from the SRF in March 2022.

Salty

Salty is a 20 year old registered American Quarter Horse. His registered name is Col Doc Salty and he was born on May 3rd 2002 so he will be turning 21 soon. He was purchased from a farm in Hammonton. Previously Salty was a trail horse and a kids horse. Salty is a beautiful Palomino color meaning his coat, mane, and tail are all blonde.

Bow

Bow is an appendix horse which means that one of his parents is a Quarter Horse and the other one is a Thoroughbred. He is 22 years old and is on loan to us from the Patroni-Keller family. Bow has formerly worked as a western pleasure horse. He has taught many people how to ride. Bow also did guided trail rides through Central Park in his past so he has a lot of experience. Bow is a big guy at 16 hands tall. He has a calm and sweet personality that we know our riders love.

Jake

Jake is a 15 year old American Cream Draft and Clydesdale cross. He is on loan from the Harms family. Jake is now the largest horse in the barn but he is a gentle giant! Jake has aced his trial and not blinked any eye at anything we have tried with him. Jake has previously been a therapy horse in two other programs. He has also starred in a high school play including going on stage! Jake is a great horse for both our independent riders and our riders with more hands on needs. Jake has quickly become a popular guy at Hearts so much so that one of our riders mom created a hashtag for him, so if you snag a good picture of this handsome man share it on social with #JakefromHeartsFarm
